Mental Health Counselor Degree Programs – This 60-hour CACREP-accredited Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares candidates with advanced knowledge and skills to become leaders and practitioners in the professional counseling/psychotherapy field. Practice is provided by applying existing counseling principles in real-world settings through practical and hands-on practice. Candidates have cognitive, emotional, behavioral or strategic intervention strategies that include pathology in health, personal development, crisis and mental health. The program provides candidates with qualifications (as defined by CACREP and ACA) designed to positively impact diverse populations across the lifespan.

This degree can lead to professional credentials as a licensed professional counselor and clinical mental health counselor and prepares you for professional counseling practice in a variety of settings: school, community, mental health, private practice, and service. But they don’t stop there.

How To Become A Mental Health Counselor Without A Degree?

To earn the Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree, a student must successfully complete the following: (1) core coursework, (2) comprehensive written examinations, and (3) an oral interview. The major coursework specifically required for a specialist degree (excluding hours equivalent to a master’s degree or qualifying credit) must be taken within eight years of graduation. This 68-hour clinical mental health counseling degree includes graduate work in counseling or a related field to meet the core counseling requirements as defined by CACREP. Prerequisite: admission to professional counseling program.

Based on the core skills and expertise of our experienced faculty, our curriculum combines academic rigor with programmatic flexibility. After earning your degree, you will be ready to meet the educational requirements for licensure as a licensed career counselor in Wisconsin and many other states.

To introduce you to the Learning Platform, you will need to complete a Learning Interest (D2L), 0-credit hour, self-directed orientation. This required course is available prior to the start of the program and will help familiarize you with the tools and resources available at D2L.

Most Affordable Master’s In Counseling Degree Programs

Most coursework can be completed individually around your schedule, but our program includes three courses concurrently. In addition, each week, including direct response and interactive role-playing, students and their teachers meet to practice communication and develop effective counseling skills.

All counseling students complete one practicum course and two practicum courses in an agency, clinic, or other health care setting to connect theory to practice. By working closely with faculty and field advisors, students will have strong support as they gain confidence in the field.

Students pursuing the Child and Adolescent Counseling specialization complete 15 core counseling courses, one specialization course, one elective, and practicum and practicum courses at sites focused on adolescent therapy.

Advising students are required to complete their internships and internships during the program. These opportunities provide students with hands-on experience in assessment, diagnosis, intervention, prevention, and counseling.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling students complete 60 credit hours: 15 core courses, 2 electives, 1 practicum course, and 2 internship courses.

An introduction to the philosophical foundations, history, and development of counseling as a profession. Emphasis is placed on ethical and legal issues, as well as the role and function of counselors in various contexts and current issues in professional practice. Facilitates active listening and provides training in entry-level counseling skills through hands-on lab experience.

Introduces the role and perspective of clinical mental health counselors. It focuses on the professional knowledge base, skills and practices necessary for counseling in a variety of clinical mental health settings. Introduces mental health delivery models and concepts, prevention strategies, intervention with target populations, emergency intervention, disaster response, and intervention for clients and their families with mental health problems. Essentials Of The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Profession

It covers the ethical foundations and standards of the counseling profession. It focuses on how to apply ethical standards and legal and professional guidelines to situations that confront counselors in clinical mental health counseling settings. Discusses issues related to training, credentialing, and professional issues in the field of counseling. Prerequisite: COUN 6003

An examination of the relationship between biological, psychological, social and cultural factors that influence human development throughout the life span. It examines the theoretical frameworks that explain optimal human development as well as the developmental causes of problem behaviors. The educational and counseling implications of these issues are discussed.

Reviews and analyzes major theoretical systems of counseling as well as current research in counseling and therapy. The client focuses on the concept and applies theoretical methods and techniques to counseling practice.
